"They will have taken fully to heart the maxim that it is the journey that matters." doesnt that sound familiar? and this from the leading advocate of postmodern thought.

a talent for speaking differently,
rather than for arguing well,
is the chief instrument of cultural change.
~Rorty

found this on dan hughes' blog and it is something that has been on my mind lately, cuz no one seems to want to argue, but if we start using a different language to desribe our view of things then maybe others will actually start to think about why you speak the way you do. what say you?

so if we are so bewildered about finding our purpose that a book(s) (when is the movie starring tom hanks coming out) sells millions so we can figure out what our purpose is, do we have any hope of finding our calling. so many things that the church in america chases in hopes of finding something that is meaningful and easy. maybe that is just the problem, we want it all to easily. it was never suppose to easy or comfortable following a God who desires all we have. yet in the USA we seem to think we can do it without effort just buy a book and you are on your way. i am not trying to deride rick warren or anyone else here but it is pretty clear to me that the purpose of any Christian no matter where they are is to love and serve others. that service of love doesn't mean writing a check or the expectation that there is something given in return. i would argue that there is nothing given in return just the knowledge that you are following the ideals of a God who remains idealistic. the church in america continues to build more and more buildings to house more and more people who seem to miss the idea that there are already enough places to love others. we started a study/discussion group in our house for young people and anyone else who wants to show up and it amazes me as we get to know more and more of these intelligent, sincere, and passionate people that they are tired of not being heard, tired of not being able to speak their minds, tired of not being able to have questions, doubts, ideas that call into question the basic assumptions and tenets of how/why/where Christianity is practiced in this paradise. the postmodern whirlwind means nothing to them because they are natives if not light years beyond anything postmodern or emerging. maybe we have become immune to the cries that surround us all too enthralled in our own quest for purpose. maybe if we started to give all the stuff/money/ideas that we have collected away we would start to hear the murmur that is running through our culture in myspace, xanga, blogger, typepad and the myriad of usenet type places that are used to create a network of support and outlet for the pain and anger that is bottled up inside them. we have failed our children in the worst way possible-we have stopped listening to them-because our own ears are filled with such beautiful things that we are unable and unwilling to turn it off. we need to stop the noise that we have mistaken for knowledge and get back to the idea of just listening, listening quietly with no agenda, listening with ears that hear the subtle clues of longning and desire to understand what it really means to give it all away to follow this GOD we speak of so casually. we must re-imagine our world not in terms of finding our purpose but in terms of listening to others find theirs. our purpose as followers of this unknowable triune GOD is clear... love others always and love them with a passion and energy that drains us to the point that the only thing that can restore us is our GOD and the only thing we can do is live in utter dependence upon our GOD and each other.

was amazed at what i heard today at church the speaker said this "isn't it nice we have all those wonderful weapons to protect us here." what disturbed me was hearing wonderful used to describe weapons and also that it was said during a sermon about committment in a church filled with people who follow Jesus. should anyone who follows Jesus think any weapon is wonderful let alone those that the USA created to inflict terror in everyone else around the world. maybe the fact that we have those wonderful weapons is one of the reasons so many others hate the USA. maybe just maybe if we didnt put our faith in weapons but in our triune GOD we would be better off and the world a little less violent. lest we forget the USA is the only country to kill citizens of another courty with these wonderful weapons. LORD forgive us for we know not what we do.

so if we live in a litigious society how do we stop that attitude? can you just simply choose not to participate. at work we were requested to send unfinished plans in digital format to a builder so they could start pricing, we came up with half a page of words to "protect" ourselves from the misuse of the files. it just didn't sit well with me for some reason. maybe it just isn't right to assume the worst, what if we expected the best? i was watching a football game a kept noticing the coaches would cover their mouths when calling a play apparently to stop the other team from figuring out the call, does the other coach really watch the other one and try to lip read what is being called, have we stumbled that far? i guess i will try not to participate in the attitude that i will get screwed if i dont cover my ass. i think i would like to live assuming the best in people maybe that is idealistic but for me that is part of believing the kingdom has come, if we continue to expect the worst maybe thats just what we will get.
